Class Time: Design Development

As Interior Architecture students, we began our initial design process by working from the inside out. This is shown in our detailed AutoCAD floor plan for the Marshall’s future home. For the exterior, our main goal was to recreate the Glenwood neighborhood’s established architecture style, while introducing a subtle modern approach through distilled details.

The front door opens up to a structural storage wall that has been carefully crafted to display many of Mrs. Marshall’s beloved belongings, while still providing open views to the adjacent room. Also incorporated on the other side of the structural storage wall is the salvaged mantel from the original house, also a significant piece to the Marshall’s. Beyond the foyer, the living room, kitchen, and dining room follow an open floor plan allowing the residents to move freely between the spaces. The long hallway leads you to the private spaces, containing the 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. There is a back door on the right hand side of the hallway that opens to an enclosed stairway leading to the basement storage area or the back deck. This large open deck is great for grilling and relaxing outdoors. As part of the Marshall’s lifestyle, outdoor living is an important aspect to their daily routine, which is why we provided a front porch with the appropriate room for a porch swing and a unique detailed privacy/shading screen on the north exterior side.
