Construction Week 1

It is very exciting. Today, finally, we are going out to the site to begin construction on the [909] house. It is hot and sunny and most of our tools are new and shiny and inexperienced as are most of our students. I feel clueless as to where to begin, what the first step is, so I hang back a little and watch until I can wrap my head around what is going on. There is the big picture of our goals today-to begin constructing the forms for the footings. These have to be precise in length, height and placement, and in accordance with code so we measure and re-measure and figure out where things are off and correct them and measure again. Robert is clear and patient in explaining things to us. I notice how we have naturally divided ourselves into groups and have all dived into the task at hand, learning on the fly. When I am not sure of something there is always someone who gets it and is willing to explain and help.
